Colophon Foundry noticed that a monospaced face is usually the afterthought in a type system, the proportional family adapted into fixed widths to fill out the set. For Space Mono, made for Google Design and published in 2016, they asked what happens if the fixed width comes first and the typeface is built for its own sake.

The answer they gave was a headline face. Space Mono was meant for editorial display work, and its letters mix a geometric base with grotesque details and something of the 1960s headline types such as Microgramma and Eurostile, faces that science fiction on screen and in print later took over for itself.

Colophon is Benjamin Critton, Edd Harrington and Anthony Sheret, working from London and Los Angeles since 2009. They packed in old style figures, superscript and subscript numerals, fractions, directional arrows and currency symbols in a center-height and a cap-height version, plus 2 stylistic sets. Regular and Bold each have an italic.

People do code in it, and it holds up there. We like it better big, on a cover or a gig poster, where the 1960s accent can do the talking.
