Type -> in Fira Code and the screen shows 1 arrow. <= becomes a single less-or-equal sign, and := closes up into 1 symbol too. The file you save still holds the same 2 or 3 ASCII characters, so the compiler sees nothing new; only the drawing changes. Nikita Prokopov’s case for it is that a programmer reads those sequences as 1 token anyway, and the eye spends effort gluing the pieces back together.
He built the ligatures on top of Fira Mono, the monospaced branch of the family that the Mozilla Foundation and Telefonica paid for. Some of them do quieter work. With .. and // the ligature mostly fixes the spacing.
If joined operators bother you, switch contextual alternates off in the editor and the plain shapes come back.
5 weights run from Light to Bold, and there is no italic, so a theme that slants its comments will get a faked lean or none. Greek and Cyrillic are in, with a slashed zero and 8 stylistic sets. On a dark editor theme we would run the Regular around 14 px and step to Medium on a screen that draws strokes thin.
