SUSE, the open source software company, had René Bieder draw it a typeface, and the result was a sans built as a hybrid: geometric shapes on 1 side, the steady rhythm of a monospace on the other. SUSE Mono takes the second half all the way, every character on the same width.

That makes it the one to use where the brand meets actual code. A config file, a command in the documentation, a terminal screenshot on a slide next to headings in the main SUSE family, all in the same voice. The italics occupy exactly the room of the roman, as they must in a monospace, so a commented line in italic does not push the columns out of line.

There are 16 styles in all, Thin at 100 to Extra Bold at 800 with an italic for each, and the character set reaches over 200 languages written in Latin, Vietnamese included. 3 stylistic sets and contextual alternates are tucked into the files. For code we’d stay between Light and Medium; the Thin is for a large title on a conference slide, and not much else.

Letters, Figures & Code

Names, values and punctuation share a fixed rhythm. Compare the zero with the capital O, and the number one with the lowercase l.
