Field 12: date of birth
Government websites where people fill in request forms were near the top of ParaType’s list when it made PT Mono. With every character the same width, a designer can work out how long an entry field needs to be, or how wide a table column, by counting characters.
It joined a family. PT Sans came out in 2009 and PT Serif in 2010, both part of ParaType’s PT Project, and PT Mono followed in 2011, designed by Alexandra Korolkova with Isabella Chaeva and paid for with support from Google Web Fonts. Like the rest of the series it covers Latin and Cyrillic, so a bilingual form in Russian and English lines up.
There is 1 Regular style and no bold, which limits it for code editors that like a heavier weight for keywords. For worksheets and tabular data that matters less. It runs slightly wider than Consolas, giving each character some air.
