Tempo and Highway Gothic are where the Red Hat typefaces started, along with a range of other American sans serifs. Paula Scher at Pentagram commissioned the family for a new Red Hat brand identity and Jeremy Mickel at MCKL designed it, a geometric sans in 2 optical sizes, Display and Text, and then this monospace as the third branch.

Why would a brand need a mono? Our guess is documentation, so that code samples and commands can stay in the house style all the way down to the command line.

What the family on this page gives you:

  • 10 styles, Light at 300 up to Bold at 700, each with an italic.
  • 2 stylistic sets, contextual alternates and a slashed zero.
  • Latin with Latin Extended, 404 characters.

The November 2024 update reworked the Medium and SemiBold, which people had kept reporting as off, so their weights now sit more evenly between their neighbors.

Our view: the Text cut of Red Hat for prose and the Mono for anything a reader might copy and paste is a pairing that needs no extra thought.
