The letters on an American road sign come from a government document, the Standard Alphabets for Traffic Control Devices, published by the Federal Highway Administration, and type people call them Highway Gothic. Delve Fonts started from those specifications for Overpass, with Red Hat and Google Fonts sponsoring, then adjusted the shapes so they would hold up small on a screen. Overpass Mono is the same design pushed onto a fixed width, for programmers.
A road sign alphabet in a code editor is a stranger idea than it sounds. Both have to be read at a glance with no context to help, and both get punished when a 0 looks like an O. This one has a slashed zero for that, plus tabular and proportional figures, fractions and a stylistic set.
It runs wider than Consolas, so 80 columns of code need a wider window or a smaller size. In exchange the letters are open and calm.
Delve Withrington, Dave Bailey and Thomas Jockin are the designers, Jason Campbell did the TrueType hinting, and Aaron Bell prepared version 4.0. 5 weights from Light to Bold, Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.
