Adobe’s notes on Source Code Pro admit that for writing code a Regular weight will usually do. Then they ship the whole range anyway, Extra Light to Black, because Source Sans has it and this family was built to match.
Paul D. Hunt made it after people asked for a monospaced version of Source Sans. He kept the design features and vertical proportions of the sans and changed the widths so every glyph, in every weight, takes the same space. Put a code sample in Source Code Pro next to body text in Source Sans and the 2 look like relatives, which is the point of a companion family.
In 2019 the romans moved to version 2.030 and the italics arrived at 1.050, and with them Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese. The Latin covers the full Adobe Latin 4 set.
What a programmer will care about more.
There is a slashed zero, 7 stylistic sets with alternate forms, superscripts and subscripts and fractions, and 16 files in all, 8 weights each with an italic. Our view is that the Light and Extra Light are wasted in an editor and lovely on a slide, where a few lines of code sit large on a dark background. Medium is a good pick for a terminal with a light theme, where the Regular can look a little faint.
