Waypoint lists, abbreviations, capitals jammed against digits on a small screen in poor light. That is the material B612 was built for. Airbus started the research in 2010 with ENAC and the Université de Toulouse III, to define an “aeronautical font” that would make text on every cockpit display easier to read and less tiring, and 2 years later it brought in the agency Intactile DESIGN to draw the family.
The Mono carries the same credits as its proportional sibling, the Intactile trio plus Jean-Luc Vinot of ENAC’s interactive informatics team, and earlier research by Vinot and Sylvie Athènes fed into it. Saint-Exupéry’s imaginary asteroid gave the family its name.
Under the technical surface the shapes hold on to a calligraphic, humanist structure. In the mono version every character takes the same width, so columns of figures line up without any tab settings, and the italics share that grid.
It is a wide monospace. A line in B612 Mono comes out about 18% longer than in Consolas, which costs you characters per line in a code editor and buys each letter more space around it. For a terminal on a laptop you may find it spreads too far; on a big monitor or a status board it is comfortable.
Airbus opened the family to the public in 2017.
