Only 4 letters break the grid in iA Writer Duo: m, M, w and W. They are 50% wider than the rest, so 2 of them side by side fill 3 cells, and everything else on the line stays monospaced. iA calls this duospace, a term they borrowed from Asian fonts that mix single and double width characters.
The company ran its writing app for 7 years with no font choice at all, only the monospace Nitti, on the argument that a fixed-width face slows the writer down and keeps a draft looking unfinished. Duo arrived in late 2017 as the second option. Before it came iA 735, an in-house duospace that went through 735 variations and was never released.
Underneath is IBM Plex Mono, so Plex’s Mike Abbink, Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen share the credit with iA’s Oliver Reichenstein, and IBM and iA share the copyright. iA’s own changes were the capital M and W and a single-storey g.
We like it most for long prose, where the wider m and w give a word like “swimming” more air than a strict monospace would. For code it makes less sense, since those 4 letters push columns out of line.
4 styles, Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, with Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese, a slashed zero and 5 stylistic sets.
