Switch Victor Mono to italic and your code comments turn into handwriting. The italics are an optional semi-connected cursive, the letters half joined, and next to the strict, geometric roman they make comments and keywords stand apart at a glance.
Rune Bjørnerås started the font in 2019 with a short list of demands for programming type:
- narrow enough to fit a lot of code on a line
- wide enough to scan quickly
- a strict, geometric, readable roman
- friendlier, flowing italics
- ligatures for programming symbols
The result is slender and crisp, with a large x-height and punctuation drawn big and clear, which matters when a missing semicolon breaks a build. There are 7 weights from Thin to Bold, each with its italic, and the character set covers Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese.
The cursive italic will divide people. We expect some people to love it for comments and others to find it busy. Try the Regular for code, the Light italic for comments, and decide after a day.
