Scene headings in capitals and pages of dialogue are what Courier Prime was drawn to set. Quote-Unquote Apps and Alan Dague-Greene made it specifically for screenplays, as a new take on Courier, the monospace Howard Kettler designed for IBM in 1956, and every character still sits on 1 fixed width.

What changed against the old Courier, by the designers’ account:

  • the serifs are crisper and not as rounded
  • counters open slightly wider
  • the Bold is darker
  • the italics lean toward a real cursive

That italic still takes up exactly the width of the upright, as it must in a monospace. There are 4 styles, Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, all on the same grid. It went into Google Fonts in December 2019. For anything that isn’t a script I’d still reach for it when a document should look typed, a letter or a zine.

Letters, Figures & Code

Names, values and punctuation share a fixed rhythm. Compare the zero with the capital O, and the number one with the lowercase l.
