Inconsolata started with Raph Levien admiring someone else’s work. Consolas, Lucas de Groot’s monospace for Microsoft’s Vista, had convinced him, as he put it more bluntly, that a monospaced font could be good, and TheSansMono, de Groot’s earlier design, made the same case. Inconsolata was the reply, and Levien’s first serious original release.
His target was printed code listings. Most programmer fonts of the time were made for the screen and, in his view, lacked the detail to hold up at high resolution. He started the Regular in 2006 with his own Spiro curve tools and FontForge. A Bold came later, in 2012, from Kirill Tkachev and the Cyreal foundry, and in 2020 the family was upgraded to a variable font.
For all the homage, it does not borrow the proportions. Inconsolata runs about 9% narrower than Consolas, so a little more code fits across a split editor pane.
What the files hold:
- 8 weights, Extra Light at 200 through Black at 900
- a slashed zero and other stylistic alternates, 3 stylistic sets
- fractions, superscripts, subscripts
- Latin with Vietnamese
We would stay at Regular or Medium in an editor. The Extra Light is lovely on a slide showing a 3 line snippet, and nowhere else.
