Helvetica goes back to Max Miedinger. Nimbus Sans from URW Design Studio is based on it, and Wei Huang took Nimbus Sans, modified it and extended it, and squeezed it into fixed-width cells for code. That lineage is the appeal: the plain grotesque look of Helvetica, with every character taking the same width.

There is a Regular and an Italic. The feature list is long for a code font:

  • small caps, with a caps to small caps feature
  • a slashed zero, subscripts, superscripts, fractions, contextual alternates and 2 stylistic sets

We like it for interface labels, spec sheets and README headers as much as for the editor, wherever you want a grid but not the typewriter feel of a Courier.
