Every letter in these Sono files takes the same width, the i as much as the m. That is the design’s default state. Tyler Finck, who signs himself ty online, built Sono as a soft monospace with a second variable axis he called mono: move it and kerning switches on, the letters pull together, and you get a proportional sans that his repository names Sono Sans. The downloads here are 7 static weights from Extra Light to Extra Bold, all of them fixed-width.
Fixed width has a cost in space. A sentence set in Sono runs 36.8% longer than the same sentence in Arial, so a column that held 12 words will hold 8 or 9.
The feature list is generous for a mono:
- a slashed zero, so 0 and O stop trading places in a serial number
- 5 stylistic sets of alternate letters
- fractions, ordinals, superscripts and subscripts
- case sensitive forms for punctuation between capitals
Google added it in July 2022 and lists it as monospace first, sans serif second. We would use it where code or numbers sit next to ordinary words, a status screen or a pricing table, and let the lighter weights handle the long lines.
