Under Chiron Hei HK, 昭源黑體 in Chinese, sits Source Han Sans, the open CJK family that Google ships as Noto Sans CJK. Its maker, Tamcy, went through the Hong Kong Traditional Chinese glyphs of that family, reviewing and adjusting them so they display better on screen and in print.
The goal was a modern style that does not belong to any 1 region. Tamcy balanced the standard glyph shapes against the stroke forms people know from printed type, taking references from the typefaces seen in daily life, so the result sits close to the prevailing, mostly commercial faces used across Traditional Chinese communities.
The credits are long because Source Han Sans was a joint effort:
- kana, bopomofo and ideographs from Ryoko Nishizuka
- Latin, Greek and Cyrillic from Paul D. Hunt
- Hangul from Sandoll Communications, Soo-young Jang and Joo-yeon Kang
- the Chinese changes and additions from Tamcy
All of that adds up to 47,623 characters. There are 8 weights, Extra Light to Black, and each one has an italic for the Latin side. The Latin also carries small caps, old-style figures and 14 stylistic sets. It is a recent arrival, from May 2025.
For an app in Traditional Chinese, a bilingual annual report or signs in a station, it is a strong free option.
