DSEG began with 7 segments. Keshikan’s first release, version 0.10 on September 7, 2014, was the initial DSEG7. The family has grown since to 51 typefaces, and DSEG7 Modern is 6 of them: Light, Regular and Bold, each with an italic.
Modern and Classic are the 2 drawings of each DSEG7 and DSEG14 font, and Mini versions of both exist as separate fonts.
What fits on 7 segments is limited, and the character list shows it. 69 characters: the digits, A to Z in both cases, the hyphen, the period, the colon, ! for a blank cell, plus the degree sign and the underscore that came in version 0.46. Most other punctuation has no shape here at all. If your readout needs a slash, a percent sign or a plus, the 14-segment DSEG fonts have them.
Keshikan’s own project page shows the font at work, a digital clock coded in JavaScript and CSS3 with no image files.
Our advice: keep it to numbers and the odd short word, a temperature or a 3 letter status code. For whole sentences on a fake display, go to DSEG14.
