Thursday afternoon
Dear Alex,
I left the book by the window. There is a note on page twenty-three that I thought you would like. Bring it along on Thursday; we can finish the conversation over coffee.
See you there.

By Year 4 or 5, children in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory are past printing and past the halfway Foundation Precursive they pick up around Year 3 or 4. What comes next is full cursive, and this font is that stage. The AU School Handwriting Fonts project planned these joined counterparts for the older years, so that each stage a state teaches has a font to match.
Under the hood it is 1 of several fonts built from the same Edu NSW ACT Hand source. The build switches on stylistic set 3 permanently to get the cursive joins; other settings of the same source produce the Precursive, an Outline, a Dotted version and a few more. It has contextual alternates too, with 6 stylistic sets.
Some details are aimed straight at the classroom:
- the Regular matches the weight of a pencil stroke
- overshoots are kept tiny, so round letters sit cleanly on ruled lines
The designers are Tina and Corey Anderson, she from software and later educational apps, he a calligrapher and graphic artist, with Eben Sorkin and Mirko Velimirovic also named in the font. 4 weights go from Regular to Bold; we would keep the heavier 2 for titles on a worksheet and let children trace the Regular.
