The slanted notches are the giveaway. Epunda Sans has angled indentations cut into its letters, and those are about the only ornament the face allows itself; the rest is plain, with a tall lowercase and big open counters so it stays easy to read small and on screen.
It has a long history for a font that only reached Google Fonts in 2025. Simon Atzbach drew the first Epunda Sans in 2007 from Epunda, a completely symmetric design, and in 2022 it was redrawn at Typofactur as a variable font with a weight axis from Light at 300 to Black at 900. On this page it comes as 14 static styles, 7 weights each with an italic, and the italics run very slightly narrower than the romans.
The feature set is generous for a quiet sans:
- stylistic alternates and case sensitive forms
- figures in old style or lining, tabular or proportional, plus fractions and ordinals
552 characters, with Vietnamese and the extended Latin accents. We’d put it to work on a public service website or a timetable, places where the text has to be read by everybody and the type should not draw attention to itself.
