Jasper de Waard was still at high school in Rotterdam when Expletus Sans went onto Google Fonts in May 2011. Born in 1996, he had been hooked on type since he was 10, picked up a good deal of his method from feedback on online forums, and at the time hoped to go on designing typefaces once school was over.
He was clear about the job. A display face, meant for headers and other large text, where it has a way of pulling the reader in; long passages he advised against. 4 weights, Regular to Bold, each with an italic that keeps almost exactly the roman’s width.
In November 2021 the family was rebuilt as a variable font with adjusted line spacing. The files on this page are the 8 static styles.
Semi Bold Italic on a magazine department head or a menu section title is where we’d start. The character set stops at Latin and its extended accents.
