The italics arrived late. Geist went out first as upright weights only, and it was release 1.5.0 that added italic styles to both the sans and Geist Mono; this download has all 18, Thin to Black with an italic for each. Later releases added Vietnamese and, in 1.7.0, a redesigned Cyrillic for every style.
Vercel made the family with Basement Studio and Andrés Briganti, and the monospace came first. The sans followed as its companion, and then a pixel version. The list of fonts the team names as influences is long and frank: Inter, Univers, SF Pro and SF Mono, Suisse International, ABC Diatype and Diatype Mono, which tells you the ground it covers, neutral grotesques and the system fonts of Apple screens.
The repository pitches the sans for headlines, logos, posters and other large display sizes. The feature list reaches further than display work, with tabular and proportional figures, case sensitive forms, fractions, 11 stylistic sets. Note that the full glyph set and font-feature-settings support come with the npm package and the zip; Vercel says the Google Fonts version is partial.
Would we set a long article in it? Probably not in the Thin. The Regular and Medium hold up well enough for interface text, and the italics finally make it usable for an emphasized word in a paragraph.
