Peixe fresco todos os dias
Girassol’s serifs poke through the lines they are supposed to sit on. They are thorny and decorative, and they break past the baseline and the cap height.
Liam Spradlin took the shapes from hand-painted street signs in and around Carcavelos, in Portugal, and he says the font is an attempt to gather up the feel of the region while owning up to his own presence in it and in the design. The letters are condensed, with moderate contrast built on the expansion model, and the flourishes copy the decoration a painter could add by hand.
Ligatures and small caps
There are a lot of discretionary ligatures, and they play on the angular, thorny build to give a line the look of something improvised on the wall. The small caps come from a second style Spradlin found on the same signs. Squarer than the capitals, they read softer next to them.
He sees it in large titles and small graphic vignettes, and so do we. 1 style, 376 characters, Latin with the extended accents.
