Kaffeehaus zum goldenen Hirsch
Denis Masharov found this one in a book. In Taschen’s Type: A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles, 1901–1938, he came across a 1913 typeface from Genzsch & Heyse, the Hamburg foundry, and decided to bring it back.
The original Glass-Antiqua was drawn by Franz Paul Glass and issued in 1912 and 1913, in a light and a bold weight and a hatched capital version, with alternate letters, initials and borders to go with it. It is very much a Jugendstil design. Slab serif and Antiqua are crossed in it, with touches of cursive calligraphy on top, and the mix gives a page a soft, informal air with a retro tint.
Masharov restored the original letters with care, extended the character set with the Latin Extended accents, and took his time over the spacing and kerning. Only the Regular made it into this release.
He drew a good number of other Google families too, Forum, Kelly Slab, Ledger, Marck Script, Poiret One, Ruslan Display and Tenor Sans among them. Born in Moscow in 1973, he trained at the Bezalel Academy in Jerusalem and died suddenly in September 2021.
Set it at display sizes, for a cafe sign or a bottle label.
