Market day in the valley

2 teenage brothers, Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry, invented an alphabet for the Fulani language in the late 1980s and named it after its first 4 letters, ADLaM, from a phrase that comes out close to “the alphabet that keeps peoples from vanishing.” Windows has handled the script natively since its May 2019 update. Faces for big sizes, the kind you would put on a poster or a shop front, were still scarce, and Microsoft paid for one.

Mark Jamra and Neil Patel, who work together as JamraPatel, drew it with Andrew Footit. For their shapes they went to Fulani things people wear and sleep under: the spots, triangles, lozenges and chevrons on khasa blankets, on Wodaabe hats and on other textiles of the culture.

A Latin set with the extended accents rides along, which lets a festival poster run an ADLaM line over an English one without changing family. Keep both of them large though. This is 1 weight drawn for display, and we would not hand it a paragraph.
