Plex is IBM’s corporate typeface, and IBM made it open source. The Brand & Experience Design team set out to capture the company’s history and the relationship between people and machines, a theme IBM has leaned on since the turn of the century, and came back with a neutral but friendly grotesque full of engineered details. Mike Abbink led it, with Bold Monday.

The Japanese cut was made with a team of Korean designers at Sandoll, whose names fill most of the credit line: Wujin Sim, Yejin Wi, Jinhee Kim, Boomi Park, Yona Kim and Kichan Ma, with Paul van der Laan and Pieter van Rosmalen beside Abbink. Plex Sans also comes in versions for Arabic, Devanagari, Hebrew, Korean and Thai, and JP reached Google Fonts in September 2022.

8,316 characters, kana and kanji with Latin, Greek and Cyrillic, in 7 weights from Thin to Bold. No italics. A slashed zero and 3 stylistic sets ride along.

For a bilingual corporate site, Regular and Medium do the work. Thin belongs on a large headline over a photo, never on body text read on a phone.
