Wool socks for Grandpa Otto
24 is the number of stitches. In Sarah Cadigan-Fried’s Jacquard collection the figure after the name says how many pixels tall the capitals are, and on a knitting machine a pixel is a stitch, so Jacquard 24 makes capitals 24 stitches high. How big that comes out on the sweater depends on the yarn, its weight more than anything.
The alphabet behind it is Victorian, a needlepoint design drawn in Berlin by Heinrich Kuehn around 1880, expanded here into a full revival with extended Latin. Type for knitting is pixel type by another name, and on a screen it reads that way too.
Machine knitting was the target, though Cadigan-Fried points out it suits hand knitting, needlework, bedazzling and other textile crafts as well. For Fair Isle Cadigan-Fried adds the old caution: mind your floats, and plan them before you start.
There is a twin, Jacquard 24 Charted, published as a separate family. This Regular holds 331 characters with kerning, ordinals and case sensitive forms, and it went up on Google Fonts in March 2024 as part of the Soft Type project.
