Open a page set in Karla Tamil on an iPhone or iPad and the Tamil will not come out right. iOS only does AAT shaping, these fonts were built with OpenType Layout shaping alone, so the shaping the Tamil depends on never happens. Mac, Windows and Linux all do OpenType shaping and show it properly. The iOS system font, for what it is worth, handles Tamil fine.

Jonathan Pinhorn drew Karla as a grotesque sans for Latin and Tamil together. This file holds the Tamil side only, in Regular and Bold, with the Latin letters living in the main Karla family, so pair the 2 on a bilingual site and let each script come from its own font. It has been on Google Fonts since 2012.
