Marker Gothic started life as a Japanese font. LXGW, the designer behind the WenKai series, took Tanugo from Tanuki Font and turned it into a Chinese face with a marker-pen hand, then kept filling in characters: the simplified sets of GB/T 2312 and the Tongyong Guifan table on one side, Taiwan’s 4,808 common characters, Big5 level 1 and the Hong Kong list on the other, until it passed 13,000.
Some strokes still give away where it came from. The README warns that certain components keep the Japanese treatment and do not follow mainland standard forms to the letter, which would matter in a schoolbook and hardly at all on a poster.
Posters are in fact where the author points it, along with video titles and subtitles, headlines for books and newspapers, e-commerce copy and text inside games. Body text, programming code and phone interfaces sit on the not-recommended side of that same list. We agree with both halves.
Google Fonts added it in May 2025. There is 1 weight, and the file also carries Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Vietnamese, so a bilingual title card can stay in a single font.
