In October 1999 Ben Weiner entered Puritan in the 3rd International Type Design Contest, and by his own account it made no impact at all. He still put it out, and it has been on Google Fonts since 2010.
Weiner had started drawing letters in 1997, when he got his first computer, while studying on the Typography & Graphic Communication course at Reading University. A course project on sans serifs had him looking at grotesques like Monotype’s Series 215, made by punchcutters and draftsmen, and at Futura and Gill Sans, built with compasses and quills by rationalists and calligraphers. He was also taken with Ehrhardt, Monotype’s condensed revival of a 17th century face by Miklos Kis. Puritan was his answer to all of that, and partly a way, he admits, to own an interesting typeface without borrowing one from the department. He wrote it up as an essay in his final year.
It is a plain student-era family of 4: Regular, Italic, Bold and Bold Italic, 244 characters, no OpenType extras. The italic takes up the same room on a line as the roman does, which makes swapping between them inside a paragraph painless.
