We set the same sentence in Arimo and in Arial and added up the widths, and the difference came to 0.0%. The italic matched its roman exactly as well. That’s the whole idea. Steve Matteson drew every character in Arimo to take the same horizontal space as its Arial counterpart, so a document written in Arial and opened on a machine that doesn’t have it keeps every line break and page break where the author left them.
The letters themselves are Matteson’s, tuned for better reading on screen, and they are not copies. Put the 2 side by side in a heading and the differences are easy to spot. In body text, few readers would notice the swap.
There are 8 styles, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold with an italic each, and the character set is the pan-European WGL one plus Hebrew and Vietnamese, 3,010 characters in all. Google updated the family in April 2026. If you build anything that has to render Office files faithfully, a web viewer or a conversion server, this is the font to install.
