The Regular of LXGW WenKai is not Klee One’s Regular. When Fontworks released Klee One in December 2020 its Regular struck LXGW as too thin for Chinese, so the SemiBold was taken as the starting point and became WenKai’s Regular. Work began on 20 January 2021, with a plain aim: add the common Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters that the Japanese original lacked.
It grew a long way past that. The full version holds the whole basic block of CJK Unified Ideographs, 20,992 characters, plus Extension A, all 11,172 Hangul syllables and some characters from the later extensions, 46,490 characters in this file. More than 4,000 of the characters were generated with zi2zi, a deep learning model, and LXGW calls those rough.
What the author says
That frankness runs through the README. LXGW is not a professional designer by their own account, admits that some Medium outlines have spikes and some Light glyphs have stray points, and describes the style as a textbook-like kai with a few Song traits. Their advice is that it suits poetry, medium-length text and annotations better than long body text. We agree; a page of it reads like careful handwriting, which is pleasant for a poem and tiring for a manual.
There are many relatives. Screen is a Medium-based cut with metrics matched to Roboto, and there are Lite, GB, TC, KR, Bright and Bright Code versions besides. This page has the main family, Light, Regular and Medium.
