Yellow Butterflies Over the Plaza
Macondo is the town in Cien Años de Soledad, and this font reached it by a roundabout path. John Vargas Beltrán took his shapes from illustrations made for a tarot card game that was itself based on the Nobel winner’s novel, and set out to turn that hand into a systematic calligraphic style for digital use.
He made the first versions in 1997 and reworked them heavily in 2009. The main Macondo family keeps the swashes as alternates. In this sister family the swash capitals come up by default, so every capital you type arrives with its flourish.
That decides the use. Put a capital at the start of a book title or a chapter as a drop cap, and avoid all caps lines, which turn into a tangle of curls.
