Before 1970, Cambodian printers set Khmer from metal type, and 1 of the styles they had was a slanted Khmer italic. Danh Hong modeled this font on those types, hence the name. It reached Google Fonts in March 2011.
There is a Latin alphabet too, condensed enough that a long word squeezes into a tight column, though it plays the supporting part here.
1 Regular style, kerning, nothing else to switch on. We would give it Khmer headlines and posters, at sizes where the lean of the old printing types can be seen.
