Set Press Start 2P at 8 px, 16 px or another multiple of 8. Anywhere in between, the squares it is built from can straddle screen pixels and blur at the edges.
The lettering comes out of 1980s Namco arcade games. Its capitals and digits trace back further, to Atari’s Sprint in 1977, but Cody Boisclair, who goes by CodeMan38, based the exact glyph shapes on Return of Ishtar from 1986, among the first games to put lowercase letters on screen alongside capitals and use them regularly.
Where the ROM font stopped at the basics, this conversion keeps going: 656 characters reaching into Greek and Cyrillic, so a pause screen can be localized for most of Europe.
