A script drew these triangles. NaN, the Berlin studio, wrote a set of procedural filters for GlyphsApp called Glyph Filters, some of them driven by Simplex noise, and ran Google’s Rubik through them. Google credits the result to NaN and Luke Prowse. Rubik itself came from Hubert & Fischer, Meir Sadan and Cyreal, and the filter code sits in a public repository for anyone curious how a doodle gets computed.
Because the filter worked on top of Rubik, everything Rubik covered survived it, Hebrew and Cyrillic included, and so did the figure kit: tabular digits, a slashed zero, fractions, superscripts.
It is a texture face, though. Keep it big, 32 px and up, a single line on a zine cover or a gig poster. Smaller than that we would expect the triangles to crowd one another and the joke gets lost.
NaN calls the wider set The Generative Fonts, and Google added this member in November 2023.
