Neon over the dance floor
Andy Clymer was looking at a neon sign from the side when Tilt started, and he saw that a plain sans, turned at that angle, began to look like graffiti. Out of that came 3 sibling families, Tilt Neon, Tilt Warp and this one, all drawn on a single skeleton: a sign painter’s geometric sans in the line of Futura and Avant Garde, with the small irregular details a letter collects when it is built up with a brush.
The trick of the family is rotation. Clymer gave it 2 unusual variable axes, Rotation in X and Rotation in Y, that swing the letters sideways or up and down, and he stopped both at 45 degrees so a word can never turn past readable. Google launched Tilt in December 2022 as the first of a run of fonts meant to show off new expressive axes. The file on this page is the static Regular, 1 style with 649 characters and Vietnamese in the set.
Where would we put it? A shop window, a club night flyer, a title card that wants to look lit from inside. Give it size and room, and keep it away from anything under 24 px, where the shop-sign effect has no space to show.
