For a big letter like an M or a W, the Moon Rocks script tries to place a blob more than 1,200 times. Small glyphs, a comma or a period, get about 150 tries. First the code shrinks the outline of a Rubik letter inward, then it packs that space with rounded lumps until the letter is packed solid.

NaN, a Berlin type practice whose founders include Luke Prowse, wrote the filter as 1 of its Glyph Filters, procedural scripts that run inside the Glyphs editor, with Simon Cozens reviewing the code. The base is Rubik, credited to Hubert and Fischer, and the generated font keeps Rubik’s Latin, Cyrillic and Hebrew along with its tabular figures, fractions and slashed zero.

It arrived on Google Fonts in February 2022 in a batch with Rubik Puddles, Microbe, Wet Paint and Glitch. Make it big; the texture is the whole show, and at small sizes the blobs run together.
