Here lies Sir Aldric the Bold

The letters are gothic at heart, and they started life in stone. Wojciech Kalinowski drew MedievalSharp around 1995, when he began cutting inscriptions in stone for a living, and for years it had only capitals and figures. The lowercase and the basic punctuation came later.

In 2010 he set about turning his stone alphabets into digital fonts. The Nova family went first, this one followed, and version 1.0 was dated 12 February 2011, a few weeks before it went up on Google. He built it, like all his fonts, in FontForge.

That first version is the one here, a single Regular. Kalinowski went on refining the design in his own repository for another decade, redrawing letters and adding bold and oblique styles there.

For a game title or the place names on a fantasy novel’s map it has the right flavor. Not for paragraphs.
