The kanji at this size started out on a pocket computer. Misaki, the bitmap font Fusion Pixel takes its 8 pixel Japanese kanji from, was begun in March 2002 for the PC-E500 and its SCRNJPN display driver, and it puts every character in a cell 8 dots by 8.
Most Misaki glyphs keep inside 7 by 7 of those dots. The spare row and column are a gap, so 2 dense kanji side by side never fuse into 1 blot, and at 8 pixels that gap is a large part of why the text can be read at all. JIS Level 1 and Level 2 kanji are both in the Misaki set, a big repertoire for so small a grid, and the ja build of Fusion Pixel picks Japanese forms where a character has more than 1 standard shape.
In this monospaced file each Japanese character takes a full square and Latin half of one, and nothing spills past its box. 28,409 characters, 1 Regular, release 2026.09.25.
Give it short bursts of text, a name over a sprite or a count of coins. In a long paragraph an 8 dot kanji asks the reader to fill in strokes the grid had no room for.
