A coworker of FONTDASU wrote some characters with a felt-tip sign pen on her lunch break, and those scribbles became Mochiy Pop. She was in her 3rd year at the workplace. FONTDASU, a graphic and web designer who had started drawing type after finding the Glyphs app in 2016, traced the writing and pushed it toward round, rolling, chewy shapes, what he calls a “mochi-mochi” feel, for shop POP signs and manga.
The first version came out in 2018. Version 2.000, the one here, was redrawn from scratch in 2020 and added basic Latin. The kanji are modified from Source Han Sans, the design Google ships as Noto Sans JP, so the whole file holds 14,293 characters in 1 style.
Fan comic artists get a treat: kana that do not normally take dakuten, a voiced あ for example, can get the mark by typing the kana followed by the combining character U+3099. There are glyphs for vertical writing as well, and full-width Latin and symbols.
The kana in Mochiy Pop One are full-width. If you want them proportional, the sibling Mochiy Pop P One does that. Both reached Google Fonts on the same day in April 2021.
