Erected by the townspeople
Wojciech Kalinowski cut letters in stone for a living, and around 1995, when he started doing inscriptions professionally, he drew the alphabet that became Modern Antiqua. Roman square capitals were the model. For years it was capitals and digits only; the lowercase and the symbols came later.
He turned his old designs into digital fonts in a row, starting with NovaCut and the rest of the Nova family, then MedievalSharp, and then this one, which reached Google Fonts in 2011.
What you get is 1 Regular with 392 characters and extended Latin, no OpenType extras. We’d keep it to capitals mostly, on a plaque or the cover of a history book, where its origin shows.
