Mona Sans comes from GitHub, drawn together with Degarism Studio, and Tobias Bjerrome Ahlin and Sebastian Carewe are credited too. Its starting point was the grotesques of the industrial era, and it was meant for product screens as much as for print. There is a sidekick, Hubot Sans, made to work next to it.
The download here is 16 static styles, 8 weights from Extra Light at 200 to Black at 900, each with an italic. The italics are close in width to the romans, so a word slipped into italic in a dense UI label does not shove the layout about.
The OpenType kit is where it earns its keep. Tabular and proportional figures, so numbers in a table line up, fractions, sub and superscripts, case sensitive forms for punctuation between capitals, and 8 stylistic sets for alternate letters. 546 characters per style cover Vietnamese and the extended Latin languages.
Google Fonts picked it up in 2024. We’d use it where a lot of small text and a few loud headings share a screen, a dashboard or a product page, because the weight range runs far enough in both directions to cover both jobs from 1 family. A long novel in it would be tiring.
