Jovanny Lemonad explained Nixie One with a recipe. Chicken with pineapple sounds strange until you taste it, he wrote, and then you wonder why you never tried it. The 2 ingredients here are neon tube signage and the typewriter.
The name points the same way. A nixie tube is the neon-filled glow tube that lit up the digits on instruments in the middle of the 20th century, and the font’s description talks about neon tubes, though Lemonad never spelled out the link.
He put a run of families on Google Fonts in its early years, with Neucha in 2010, Days One the same year as this face, and Prosto One, Cuprum and Scada in 2012. Nixie One is a 1-style, Latin-only display font from 2011. Use it at headline size, where the neon idea comes across.
