The Bassa people once used a sign system to avoid slave traders, and Dr. Thomas Flo Lewis developed the Bassa Vah alphabet from it. Colonial powers later suppressed the script, and it fell out of use.

It is written left to right and has capital and small letters: 23 consonants, 7 vowels and 5 tone marks. The language it serves is spoken in Liberia and Sierra Leone, and by communities in Brazil and the Caribbean.

Noto’s sans covers the Unicode block in 4 weights, Regular, Medium, Semi Bold and Bold, with Latin beside it. For a primer or a community newsletter putting the script back into print, Bold headings over Regular text is the setup we would start from.
