Written in Sierra Leone
Mohammed Turay created the Mende Kikakui script for the Mende language of Sierra Leone, which around 2 million people speak. It was in wide use in the early 20th century, until the Latin alphabet mostly pushed it aside. It is an abugida, and it runs right to left.
Monotype’s design team gave it an unmodulated sans in the Noto collection, covering 218 characters from the Mende Kikakui block of Unicode. Mende needs software with complex text layout, shaping included, so older or very basic apps may not set it properly.
1 Regular, with Latin included.
