Liao dynasty steles, rubbing no. 12

In the Liao Empire of north-eastern China, between the 10th and 12th centuries, the Khitan people wrote their language in 2 separate systems at once, a large script and a small one. This font is for the small script, a logo-syllabary that the Jurchens also used for a while after the Khitan.

Nobody writes it now, so the users are scholars: people transcribing inscriptions, editing papers, labeling objects in a collection. For them Google’s Noto project has a single Regular style with the Khitan Small Script block, some CJK ideographs and basic Latin, 497 characters in all. The designers named in the font are LIU Zhao, ZHANG Congyu and Kushim JIANG of Guyu Beijing.
