Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Print it at 39 points, Igino Marini’s note says, and you match the original. French Canon was one of the big bodies of Oxford’s hand-set type, and the roman and italic here were cut by Peter De Walpergen for John Fell, who died in 1686 and willed his whole stock of punches, matrices and molds to the University of Oxford.
Stanley Morison opened his 1951 account of the collection by pointing out that Oxford held the oldest punches and matrices surviving in England, and that they were still being used to cast type for books. Marini’s digital version comes from those same types. Spacing and kerning were done with iKern, his own system for setting both automatically, and the copyright on the digital version dates from 2007.
So how does it read? Coarsely cut, with a sharp jump between thick and thin, which Morison himself found hard to like. At 39 points those rough edges become the charm of it. Down at paragraph sizes it would look smudged and old, and we would not try it there.
The italic is the more useful half for display work; it sets 7% narrower than the roman, so a long title fits in fewer lines. There are discretionary ligatures and 4 stylistic sets as well.
