Notes From The Reading Room
The reading room opens onto a quiet courtyard. Along the shelves, small handwritten labels mark the collections. A visitor leaves a book open beside the window, keeping a place for the next reader.
A heading marks the next chapter. The margins leave room for a note while the text continues across the page.

Through most of the 20th century Gurmukhi type went monolinear, every stroke the same thickness, and that became what Punjabi readers expected from print. Tiro Gurmukhi goes back further. John Hudson and Fiona Ross restored the thick and thin of the old Punjabi manuscript hands, so a page has a texture closer to writing than to signage.
It started life as a typeface for the Murty Classical Library of India, a book series of old literary texts, and that is still where it fits most naturally. For the open release Tiro added more characters and an italic, adapted by Paul Hanslow.
The Latin is part of the deal too, and it has the accented letters needed to romanize Indian languages, which a scholarly edition with romanized terms in the notes will need. 10 stylistic sets come with it, along with small caps.
Set it for a collection of poems in Punjabi, or a critical edition. An app interface is the wrong place, we think.
