Peter De Walpergen was probably never trained to cut punches. That was the opinion of Harry Carter, who wrote the history of the Fell Types in 1968: De Walpergen was born in Frankfurt am Main, came from a family of Protestant refugees from Antwerp, and was hired by the Dutch East India Company in 1671 to found type and print in Java. Then John Fell took him on as his own type-founder at Oxford and gave him the large sizes to cut, Double Pica among them.
Stanley Morison found the result hard to pin down and impossible to approve of entirely. He saw a link to Dutch work of the later 17th century, the large types attributed to Christoffel van Dijck, but De Walpergen pushed the contrast between thick and thin much further and left crudities van Dijck would not have.
Those crudities are why you would want it.
Igino Marini’s digital Double Pica dates the original to an acquisition in 1684 and recommends printing it at 21 points, its original size. A roman and an italic, Latin only, spaced and kerned with Marini’s iKern software, with discretionary ligatures and 4 stylistic sets. Set big, on a title page or a broadside, the rough contrast has real presence; smaller than its native size the heavy strokes clog.
