Libre Bodoni goes back to Morris Fuller Benton’s Bodoni for American Type Founders, and Pablo Impallari and Rodrigo Fuenzalida worked from ATF specimens printed in 1923. The note they left inside the files says what they were after, a Bodoni for body text on the web, which is a stranger job than it sounds for a face of this kind.
Has it worked? Partly. The lowercase is small under tall capitals, 60% of the cap height, so on screen it wants 18 px or more. In print at 10 or 11 pt it should behave itself.
4 weights from Regular to Bold, each with its italic, 8 styles in all, and 590 characters that reach Vietnamese. Case sensitive forms, fractions, superscripts and subscripts are built in, and Google added this version in April 2022.
For a culture magazine headline we’d take the Bold Italic. On a book jacket, Regular set big.
