Most legal filings in the United States are set in Times New Roman, and the Supreme Court requires New Century Schoolbook for its own. Jeremy Mickel of the Los Angeles foundry MCKL started from those 2 when Titus Kaphar and Reginald Dwayne Betts commissioned a typeface for their exhibition The Redaction at MoMA PS1. Forest Young brought him onto the job. The show was built from claims filed by the Civil Rights Corps on behalf of people jailed because they could not pay court fines and fees, so the letters were meant to feel like the paperwork that kept them there, default and familiar.

Redaction comes in 7 grades. The plain cut is clean, and each numbered grade after it is a further step of damage, the kind a page picks up after it has been faxed and photocopied through the system a few times. 10 is the first of those steps. At reading size it still passes for an ordinary serif, and only up close do the edges start to show small square notches where a curve should be.

We like this grade for running text that should carry a hint of the story without making a show of it, a catalog essay or a long caption. Regular, Italic and Bold, Latin-1 plus the wider European accents.
